The Lord is my shepherd: I shall not want. 2)He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3)He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4)Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5)Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6)Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Most of us know this scripture by heart, but have you ever stopped to think about verse 5? Why would He put oil on your head or my head? What's up with the oily head?
Well, in Jesus' time being a shepherd was a job men did. Something they did to care for the sheep was to keep the flies off the sheep's heads. The flies would lay their eggs in the nostrils, ears and eyes of the sheep, the eggs would hatch becoming worms! The sheep would many times beat their heads on the rocks to get the worms out of their heads. So the shepherds would anoint the heads with oil that the flies would not be able to give the sheep such fierce anguish.
When we are saved and have a relation with Jesus, we are anointed with oil from Him. When we have troubles come into our lives, we have His oil covering us that we might be able to withstand the anguish that comes along with trouble. Sometimes the trouble harsh, though prayer we can be assured we will be covered, so the oil is the covering of the Holy Spitit!
